Yoga is an incredibly popular practice meant to unite your body, mind, and spirit, and there many kinds of yoga to choose from. With so many different types of yoga styles, it can be difficult to know where to start. This article will help you understand what the most popular kinds of yoga involve so you can choose the kind of yoga that is best for you.

Different Types of Yoga Styles

Hatha Yoga

Hatha yoga, or “sun and moon” yoga, is slow-paced and gentle. It is a good kind to start with if you have never done yoga before. Because of the slow pace, it is easy to learn the asanas, or poses, with this kind of yoga.

Iyengar Yoga

This kind of yoga was created by yoga teacher B.K.S Igengar. It focuses on getting your body into perfect alignment for each asana. It emphasizes holding the poses for a long time instead of moving constantly from one to the next, like in Ashtanga. Iyengar yoga uses blocks, straps, and other props to align the body properly for each asana. Like Hatha yoga, it is also a good yoga for beginners.

Ashtanga Yoga

ashtanga yoga

Ashtanga yoga, or “eight limbs” yoga, is a fast-paced, intense kind of yoga practice. It involves doing a sequence of asanas that are synchronized with your breathing. It can be physically demanding, so it can improve your stamina. By the same token, though, it is not for beginners, because it can be difficult to learn the asanas this way.

Vinyasa Yoga

Also known as “breath-synchronized movement” yoga, is a fast-paced type with an emphasis on breath work. Vinyasa yoga starts with performing simple sun salutations and goes on to asanas with intense stretching.

Power Yoga

Power Yoga is a style of yoga that was created in the western world, based on Ashtanga Yoga. Like Ashtanga yoga, it involves a fast-paced series of asanas.

Bikram Yoga

Also known as “hot yoga”, Bikram yoga is designed to make you sweat. It is done in a room heated up to 105 degrees Fahrenheit, with a high level of humidity. A sequence of 26 asanas is performed that helps you loosen your muscles. The intense sweating that results is supposed to help cleanse your body. Because of the high heat and humidity, you should talk to your doctor before engaging in this kind of yoga.
